Base SAS certification officially known as “The SAS Certified Base Programmer for SAS 9 credential” is a certification for beginners in SAS programming. This certification requires knowledge and experience of SAS version 9.3 and is one of the essential requirements for many other advanced SAS certifications. The certification is a decent assessment of a person’s SAS programming skills. However, it does not cover a number of non-SAS related skills that are essential for a business analyst. Here is a link to an interesting debate on Stack Overflow.
The Body of knowledge for SAS Base certification

How do I prepare for Base SAS certification?
If you are an experienced SAS analyst and want to get a feel of the kind of questions asked in the test, you can try and check your readiness taking a Demo Exam (follow the link)
This is not a comprehensive exam but it gives you an idea of what to expect in the exam.
If you need more preparation for the exam, one option is to take one of the many training programs offered by the SAS Institute (but very expensive) or one of its certified partners. A 2 week SAS training by SAS institute costs around $1500.
It is strongly recommended to practice with online practice exam incase if you have experienced of SAS and now getting yourself certified or you have spent for the first option of training and ready for exam but not confident or do not have experienced the exam and style. One of the best online practice exam for SAS certification is www.sas-exam.com
You can also buy one of the many books available from the SAS Institute that can help you prepare for the exam. But given the nature of the exam, learning by books only may not be the best option.
You can enroll for the Base SAS certification online by clicking below link http://support.sas.com/certify/creds/bp.html#t2

- Be calm and read the questions carefully and decide on which topic the author is trying to test your knowledge of SAS, remember, this you should do before you start reading options.
- Now once you done with the first step, read all the choices carefully before choosing an answer.
- If you have some confusion or not clear about for any question, you can mark them and move onto the next question.
- At the end of the exam you can come back to the question you marked and moved on, and choose or change your answer.
All questions asked are multiple choice questions, in most of the cases you will have four choices and in all cases there will be only one and only one correct answer. You will be provided with a scratch paper, work out the question on this paper instead of just doing it in your head. You may also see some direct questions on a SAS function, procedure or system option. Exam authors want to see if you are familiar with the latest additions to the SAS software, so they might throw some new SAS function or options introduced in the latest version.
These tips will improve your chances of getting the answer right and you can exploit the knowledge you gain by studying and practicing for exam. I highly recommend practice on line before you appear for your exam. I did my practice at http://www.sas-exam.com and this help me pass with 91%

After having gone through the SAS Base Programmer certification training material, it is now time to take the exam. Before you begin, there are some key features of the Base Programmer Certification Exam (A00-211) that you should be aware of. Firstly, remember that the exam is computer based and the exam time is three hours, during which you need to answer eighty questions. Secondly, keep in mind that the SAS BASE programmer certification questions are mostly of the multiple choice type and there is deduction of marks for an incorrect answer. Some of the questions have more than one correct answer. To get awarded points for such questions, you must get all the answer options correct. Usually the official pass percentage is 70%. However, the pass percentage may vary, so you will be informed of the exact pass percentage before your begin the exam. Now that you have seen the type of questions and the passing score for the exam, let us look at some tips before you sit for the SAS Base programmer certification exam.
First of all, it is important to understand the concepts. Do not blindly memorize. If possible, you can practise the configuration part, although it is not mandatory. Prepare yourself basing your study on the syllabus, and not the text books, as you can be sure that 99% of the questions will be set from the syllabus. You need to cover all the chapters, as you are most likely to get questions chapter wise, such as import and export raw data files, manipulate and transform data, combine SAS data sets, create basic detail and summary reports using SAS procedures, identify and correct data, syntax and programming logic errors..
Most importantly, decide on the certification date only after you finish one round of study of all the topics covered in the syllabus. People who have passed the SAS Base programmer Certification test recommend concentrating on topics such as SAS Certification Prep Guide: Base Programming for SAS 9, Third Edition. This book is usually more than enough and you will not need any other supporting material, except this. Be sure that you cover the following topics from the text book.
- Use FORMATTED and LIST input to read raw data files.
- Use INFILE statement options to control processing when reading raw data files.
- Use various components of an INPUT statement to process raw data files including column and line pointer controls, and trailing @ controls.
- Combine SAS data sets.
- Access an Excel workbook.
Creating Data Structures
- Create temporary and permanent SAS data sets.
- Create and manipulate SAS date values.
- Export data to create standard and comma-delimited raw data files.
- Control which observations and variables in a SAS data set are processed and output.
- Investigate SAS data libraries using base SAS utility procedures.
- Sort observations in a SAS data set.
- Conditionally execute SAS statements.
- Use assignment statements in the DATA step.
- Modify variable attributes using options and statements in the DATA step.
- Accumulate sub-totals and totals using DATA step statements.
- Use SAS functions to manipulate character data, numeric data, and SAS date values.
- Use SAS functions to convert character data to numeric and vice versa.
- Process data using DO LOOPS.
- Process data using SAS arrays.
- Validate and clean data.
- Generate list reports using the PRINT procedure.
- Generate summary reports and frequency tables using base SAS procedures.
- Enhance reports through the use of user-defined formats, titles, footnotes and SAS System reporting.
- Generate reports using ODS statements.
- Identify and resolve programming logic errors.
- Recognize and correct syntax errors.
- Examine and resolve data errors.
The “SAS Certified Base Programmer for SAS 9 Credential ″ certification exam verifies the profound knowledge in the area of SAP Base Programming. This certificate proves that the candidate not only has the pre-requisite understanding of Base programming development but is also able to apply these skills in a practical manner under the supervision of a project lead. This is the ideal certification for those relatively new to SAS programming or new to SAS certification
The textbooks will usually also contain sample SAS Base Programmer certification questions. Some of the questions which you can expect are as follows:
The following SAS program is submitted:
X = 0;
do Index = 1 to 5 by 2;
X = Index;
Upon completion of execution, what are the values of the variables X and Index in the SAS data set named WORK.LOOP?
X = 3, Index = 5
X = 5, Index = 5
X = 5, Index = 6
X = 5, Index = 7
Usually, the answers to these model questions are given at the back of the page or the book. It is a good idea to try and solve these sample SAS Base Programmer certification questions as much as possible, for not only will it help you practice the concepts you have learnt but it will also help improve your speed of answering questions.

Understand Format & Layout: Simplify and clear in your mind how SAS formats & layout are, so you can apply them without looking them up every time. Apply your mind and adjust yourself for correctly create and apply your own formats & layouts
Read between the lines: Read the questions CAREFULLY, because a misplaced “.” period or other common mistakes defines the right and wrong answers
No baggage Pl: If you have programming background (other than SAS) you may need to empty your baggage what you may carry about some structures as SAS has his little different and rigid syntaxes, for an instance, SAS loves DO and uses it to replace FOR Loops and the syntax is slightly different. Try and learn the different Loops and effects on the loop counter
Important: Learn accumulating variables & learn how to read data from all sources especially excel and text files. Learn the basics PROC steps and what they do and default outputs.
Last but not the least: SAS may looks a different creature to you in beginning, however you should think as SAS programmer, While reading question you may find it confusing, referring to “a” data set which usually means one data set but shouldn’t with SAS. Use grammar to interpret what is being asked then if a question arises in your mind whether one or another answer is correct, choose the one based on what is SAS trying to do rather than what is grammatically the best answer. Let’s hope they will fix those questions. I wish they had a way to flag questions like that in the certification exam so they could fix them later.
I have finished about 30 minutes before and had kept a list of questions where i was unsure about or had confusion, for me the list was of 7 questions out of the 70. I went back and checked my answers again focusing on the ones i had marked down.
I learnt this by practicing repeatedly obviously not the real SAS certification test, I practice with www.sas-exam.com
I passed 🙂
